This 3,000-square-foot apartment in Thane is a stunning example of how neutrals can be both calming and captivating. The designers, Jasem Pirani and Huzefa Rangwala of MuseLAB, were tasked with creating a light, neutral palette that felt cohesive and elegant, while avoiding the mundane. Their solution? A masterful use of textures, materials, and lighting to create a space that is both serene and visually engaging.
The apartment's color palette is a symphony of creamy hues, from ecru and taupe to soft pistachio tones and buttery yellows. Dusty blues add a playful touch, breaking up the monotony. The designers' challenge was to make this palette feel layered and rich, rather than flat. They achieved this by using a light veneer, almost white, to complement the tone-on-tone material palette of beiges and warm ivories. Every surface is meticulously crafted to feel refined and quiet, without sudden contrasts or disruptions. Material transitions became the key to adding variation, all while staying true to the original brief.
The living area, spanning 900 square feet, is a masterpiece of curved lines and undulating surfaces. The layout, with its sequence of circles set within a square-like volume, creates a fluid and dynamic space. The dining area features a grand dome light, custom-made by Name Place Animal Thing, and a circular marble table, creating a dramatic and elegant atmosphere.
One of the most challenging parts of the project was the marble inlay floor, which the designers wanted to resemble terrazzo without using traditional terrazzo. They achieved this by using Lake Placid Quartzite, a hardy material cut into terrazzo-like chips using waterjet technology, and inlaid into marble. This meticulous task required precise alignment with the ceiling and other circular forms in the space, ensuring a seamless and stunning result.
The coffee corner, a charming addition to the living area, is a testament to the clients' love for coffee. The designers incorporated this into the daily routine of the couple, who run a small-batch coffee brand and appreciate the ritual. The kitchen, meanwhile, is a sanctuary of white neutrals with subtle sage interventions, creating a calm and inviting atmosphere.
The primary bedroom is a sanctuary of tranquility, with shades of sandy taupe and curves that evoke a sense of calm. The palette was inspired by the clients' calm and grounded personalities, reflected in their first few meetings. A clean arched headboard, finished in Movingue White veneer, adds a touch of depth and texture. Scalloped motifs line the bay window, framing the view of the spa pool and creating a serene ambiance.
The parents' bedroom takes on a more mature design sensibility, with tropical wallpaper adding a touch of whimsy. The sons' bedrooms and bathrooms, on the other hand, feature a playful spin on the motifs seen throughout the home, with electric green and steel blue shades. The apartment strikes a perfect balance between whimsy and restraint, creating a space that is both textural and minimal, without feeling heavy or cold.
